Chimney repairs that keep the stack sound and the water out.
Chimneys are a charming and iconic part of any roof, and on the terraces of north Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale nearly every house has one. We repair every part of them: chimney flaunching, chimney pointing, chimney pots, roof flashing, step flashing, chimney capping and much more.
Water that gets in at a chimney usually comes through tired mortar joints, cracked flaunching round the pots, or lead flashing that has lifted away from the brickwork. We rake out and repoint the joints, re-flaunch the top, renew the lead with proper step flashing and soakers, and fit caps or cowls to stacks that are no longer used.
With electric heating, some chimneys are no longer needed and clients choose to remove the stack altogether. When we remove a chimney stack, our certified staff take off the flaunching, cowls and pots, then take the bricks down one by one, safely and carefully, and make good the roof. Wherever a stack stays, we find materials that match the original look of the chimney and the house, because we care about keeping it looking right.

Our method
How we repoint a chimney
- Inspection. We look over the mortar, the bricks, the flaunching and the lead to find where water is getting in.
- Old mortar raked out. Loose and crumbling mortar is raked out to a sound depth without damaging the bricks.
- Repointed. New mortar is pressed in and finished to match the joints on the rest of the stack.
- Flaunching renewed. The mortar round the pots is renewed so rain runs off the top of the stack.
- Lead checked. Step flashing and soakers are refixed or renewed where the stack meets the roof.
- Pots and caps. Pots are reset or replaced, and caps or cowls fitted to flues that are no longer used.
