Homes and roofs in Newton Heath

Newton Heath grew up around the railway works, the mills and the canal along Oldham Road, and most of its housing is still the long brick terraces that went up for the workers, with slate roofs, shared chimney stacks and back yards. Between the wars the council added estates of semis with concrete tile roofs, and newer houses fill the old mill sites.

Where we work in Newton Heath

We cover all of M40 round Newton Heath: the terraces off Oldham Road and Old Church Street, the streets round Brookdale Park and Culcheth, Monsall and Miles Platting on our own doorstep, and out towards Clayton and the Droylsden border.

Common roof problems in Newton Heath

On the old terraces the trouble is slate that has slipped as the nails rust through, tired lead where one roof steps down to the next, and shared chimney stacks that need repointing. On the inter-war semis it is cracked ridge mortar and concrete tiles that have gone porous and grown moss.
